Service Learning and Internships. Beau reported that Ruth Andrea Levinson and Michael Ennis-McMillan will attend CEPP’s Feb 6th meeting to discuss service learning. We also intend to invite Mike Profita, Penny Loretto and Susan Kress for the discussion. Scheduling an open forum in the spring to get additional feedback may be useful. ID Lines. Beau updated CEPP on CAPT’s progress on the draft of procedures for tenure-track lines shared between departments/programs. At the March 2007 faculty meeting CEPP intends to bring its motion to the faculty on the creation of tenure-track lines shared between departments/programs. Some members of CEPP will attend the Feb. 9th Academic-Staff meeting where CAPT’s procedures will be distributed and discussed. Motions. At the Feb 2 faculty meeting CEPP intends to bring 2 motions: 1) eliminating our affiliation with Cardoza Law School and 2) writing proposal. Minor amendments were made to the rationale on the Cardozo Law School motion. We spent the remainder of the meeting discussing the writing proposal including: 1) the position of writing director 2) the role of “professional” in the writing center 3) double majors and overarching philosophical concerns Writing Director. As listed last week, there are four options for the position of writing director: 1) a fulltime administrator in Academic Affairs (similar to the Director of International Programs) 2) a tenure-track/tenured faculty member in the administration but teaching 2 courses (similar to the Director of the FYE) 3) a tenure-track/tenured faculty member with administrative duties but outside the administration with one or two course releases (similar to the Director of Expository Writing) 4) a 3-year contract hire (non-tenure track) After continued discussion we agreed that for 2007-08 it would be best to pursue option 3 and have the VPAA or DOF appoint a ТщЖЙЦЦНтАц faculty member to serve a one-year term as Writing Director. During this person’s one-year term they would to get the program off the ground and help organize the search for a longer-term Writing Director along the lines of options 1 or 2. If the motion passes it will have major implications for the following positions: Director of the Writing Center, Director of Expository Writing and the Director of Writing Across the Curriculum. In terms of resources and responsibilities, it is likely that these positions will be folded into the new Writing Director’s position. We discussed a tentative job description for the Writing Director. In addition to taking on the responsibilities currently being shouldered by the positions mentioned above, the Writing Director may: meet with departments to assist with the departmental writing requirement, organize workshops for faculty, gather and assess WC trends and data, direct the WC, assist in hiring professionals, and possibly teach 1 or 2 sections of En 105 or a WI course, or a 1-credit course on writing. Writing Professional. We discussed the possibility of hiring a professional in the Writing Center. There was discussion about the philosophy of hiring professionals. What would a "professional" do in the writing center? If the writing center is a peer-tutoring center and the Director of Writing is the head of the Writing Center then what would the professional's job description look like? We speculated that a professional might assist with ESL instruction, monitoring, assisting, training, and assessing the peer-tutors, possibly teach a section of EN 105 or a WI (if the person has the necessary credentials), coordinate/administer the WC, trouble-shoot problems peer-tutors confront, work with students whose writing needs special attention, and organize workshops for peer tutors. Professionals may add credibility and consistency to the Writing Center, especially during the evening hours, when the WC is heavily used. Will the departmental requirements prevent students from studying abroad? What about double majors? What if a student spends an entire year abroad? What about minors? Departmental requirement should build in flexibility to address these potential problems. Additionally, students and advisors should plan for this potentiality. Who approves the department plans? The curriculum committee will encourage and advice departments. The new Writing Director can help advise departments. Departmental autonomy was discussed. We agreed that the edited assessment section was improved. 6’”enГ Е е ц ЄЙJ?C‡ˆќєќьќєќьќєќєќєќукугќ hUTЁhUihUTЁhUiaJ"hUTЁhUiaJ h#WhUiH*h}YghUi5hUiжзde я № A f › д е : ž Ь љ њ МНЃЄC§§§§§§јјјјјјјјјј§§§§§§§§§§§§gdUiˆўCDŒ†‡ˆ§§§§§§ 1hАа/ Ар=!А"А# $ %АЅD@ёџD NormalCJOJQJ_HmH sH tH DA@ђџЁD Default Paragraph FontViѓџГV Table Normal :V і4ж4ж laі (kєџС(No List ˆ&џџџџ! ГF6X вe ў‚5|k0qe ўџџџџџџWБ и6Œ0џџџџ– 7Œ0џџџџ zXrЫ џ@€cc€\4ввccГћєџљў*ˆP @џџUnknownџџџџџџџџџџџџGTimes New Roman5€Symbol3 Arial3Times"Aˆ№аhЮВЦКSВЦoВЦ 0dЃ xС№ ДД24dП‹73ƒQ№мHX)№џ? Document.8
