President Marc Conner and College administrators welcomed staff to the final staff meeting of the year, where they reminded staff of upcoming opportunities, reflected on the semester’s successes, and encouraged community feedback during future planning processes.

Announcements

2024 President's Awards for Leadership and Service 

‌The President's Awards for Leadership and Service are presented to community members who have embraced the educational mission and cooperative spirit of the College. Student awards were recently presented to Apolonia Alvarez '24, Ishani Chakravorty '24, Nathaniel Lowell ' 24, and Divine Perez '24. The faculty, staff, and team awards will be presented at the Retirement and Recognition event on May 21. The staff award will go to Zhenelle Lebel, managing director of Arthur Zankel Music Center, and posthumously to Lisa Burke (1979-2023), former assistant director of Sponsored Research. The faculty award will go to David Howson, senior teaching professor and Arthur Zankel Executive Director of arts administration. The team award will go to the staff of the Office of Religious and Spiritual Life.

‌SUNS alert update 

‌Campus community members signed up to receive SUNS notifications should have received a safety alert early Sunday morning concerning an attempted burglary in Sussman Village. The unidentified individual did not enter the apartment, no one was injured, and no property was stolen. The individual, who may have attempted to gain entry through a window, fled when observed. Law enforcement was called immediately and conducted a thorough investigation, including testing for fingerprints. Campus Safety will continue to work with law enforcement on this case. We remind all ground floor apartment residents that Campus Safety has “window sticks,” which prevent windows from being slid open if left unlocked and allow the window to open a few inches for fresh air. ‌Stoles and Cords Ceremony 

‌The Cords and Stoles Ceremony celebrates student identities and experiences ahead of Commencement. Affinity-based ceremonies are affirming and serve to make space for students to honor all the pieces of their identity that helped them grow while at college. The event will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. on May 14, at Arthur Zankel Music Center. More information will be provided via email.

Workforce Team Challenge

‌The Workforce Team Challenge will take place on Thursday, May 16, in Albany. To participate, select 鶹ƽ’s team and fill out all the required information. Do not check out; 鶹ƽ’s team captain, Darren Drabek, will manage payment. Contact Darren Drabek or Rachel Roe-Dale for more information.

MDOCS' Golden Acorn Awards 

‌Tǻ岹, at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, in Filene Recital Hall, MDOCS will host its end-of-year awards show that celebrates student nonfiction media-making across campus. Acorn awardees honor MDOCS course projects as well as independent student works from the past year that are the most innovative, risk-taking, and real. Doors open at 5 p.m. to view full-length works, mingle, and enjoy light snacks and refreshments.

Stewart's Signature Series 

‌This summer’s Stewart’s Signature Series includes Summer Jazz Institute concerts and New York State Summer Writers Institute readings. The lineup features the Danilo Pérez Trio, Alexa Tarantino Quartet, and readings by Paul Harding, Cristina Garcia, Jenny Offill, and others. Sponsored by Stewart’s Shops and the Dake Family, these premiere events are free for the local community. Contact Maria McColl with questions.

First-Year Experience summer reading 

‌The Class of 2028 summer reading will be “Between Two Kingdoms: A Memoir of a Life Interrupted” by Suleika Jaouad. Incoming students, peer mentors, and Scribner Seminar faculty will be given copies of the book. The Office of First-Year Experience looks forward to hosting Jaouad on campus for a keynote event early in the fall semester. 

‌Projects for Peace winner 

‌This year's Projects for Peace winner is Chingpheng Phoun '24. His project, "Reviving Rust," will take place in Sisophon, Cambodia, and produce a safer, eco-friendly cook stove for families in need. The annual grant offers a 鶹ƽ student $10,000 to design a project that contributes to peace anywhere in the world.

 

Beach volleyball tournament 

‌A beach volleyball tournament hosted by the Peer Academic Coaches for Health and Human Physiological Sciences will take place at 4:30 on Friday, May 3, at the volleyball court by the Tang Teaching Museum. All community members are welcome and can .

‌Tang faculty preview

‌The Tang Teaching Museum will hold a preview of 2024-25 exhibitions and programs at noon on Wednesday, May 15. The preview is intended for faculty who have previously worked with the Tang and those interested in learning new approaches for integrating exhibitions into their curricula. A buffet lunch will be provided. Please RSVP to Kelly Ward by May 10.

‌Bike for free with CDPHP Cycle ‌

‌Give+Go move-out donation collection‌

‌From April 28 to May 18, students are invited to donate non-perishable food, clothes, and gently used home goods to our local nonprofit partners: Backstretch, Trinity Alliance, and Capital City Rescue Mission.
