Peer Mentor Referral
The ideal peer mentor is committed to academic excellence, readily available and accessible to first-year students, and knowledgable about the wide array of resources at the college. Some suggested guidelines:
Class year
Although peer mentors may be drawn from any class, we particularly encourage applications
from sophomores. As recent "graduates" of the FYE, sophomores are most familiar with
the expectations of the Scribner Seminar; they are most likely to live in the residence
halls with the first-year students; and they are closest in age and, perhaps, share
the closest affinities with first-year students.
Academic and social integrity
As role models for first-year students, peer mentors are to exemplify academic integrity
and good citizenship. Accordingly, peer mentors should have excellent integrity records.
Academic excellence and experience
Peer mentors should have strong academic records with a demonstrated commitment to
excellence. While the successful peer mentor need not major in the faculty's department
or discipline(s), some familiarity with and interest in the faculty's area of expertise
and/or the Seminar's subject matter will contribute to the mentor's success.
