Latin American, Caribbean, and Latinx Studies Minor

The LACLAS Minor

The LACLAS Minor

The Latin American, Caribbean, and Latinx Studies (LACLAS) minor gives students the opportunity to undertake the comparative study of the political, economic, cultural, artistic, and performing traditions and contemporary realities of Latin American, Caribbean, and Latina/o/e/x communities through a flexible structure and a wide variety of course options.

The skills and knowledge students gain are valued by employers across sectors such as foreign policy, international relations, public administration, education, healthcare, information services, communications, and commerce.

Completing the LACLAS minor was truly an interdisciplinary and fluid experience for me. Taking LACLAS classes while also studying sociology and Spanish allowed me to deepen my perspective on social, political, and economic issues in Latin America. I am especially grateful for the critical, decolonial approach that the LACLAS program exemplifies. I completed much of the minor through a study abroad program in Oaxaca, Mexico, which I highly recommend to people who want to develop an intellectual, but also emotional connection to the realities of migration in Latin America. Completing the minor was a great way to apply my interests to the context of Latin America, which helped me understand how I want to use my knowledge after graduating.
