Composer and Conductor in Conversation

David Lang, a Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and co-curator of the exhibition I was a double, in discussion with David Alan Miller, Grammy-winning music director of the Albany Symphony Orchestra. Lang is the 2014–15 Don and Judy McCormack Endowed Visiting Artist-Scholar.

The event will take place in the exhibition at the Tang Teaching Museum. Admission is free and open to the public.

  • Tuesday, September 16, 6:30 p.m.: "Composer and Conductor in Conversation" with David Lang, Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and co-curator of I was a double, and David Alan Miller, Grammy-winning music director of the Albany Symphony Orchestra. Lang is the 2014–15 Don and Judy McCormack Endowed Visiting Artist-Scholar at Â鶹Æƽâ°æ College. The event will take place in the exhibition at the Tang Teaching Museum. Admission is free and open to the public.

  • Wednesday, September 17, noon: Special Curator Tour of I was a double, with composer David Lang and Tang Museum’s Dayton Director Ian Berry.

  • Thursday, October 9, 7 p.m.: Tour of I was a double, with Tang Museum’s Dayton Director Ian Berry.

  • Thursday, October 16, 6 p.m.: Join composer David Lang, choreographer Debra Fernandez and So Percussion for an evening performance. The program includes new dance and music inspired by I was a double, as well as Lang’s the so-called laws of nature—part 2 (2002) and Bryce Dessner’s Music for Wood and Strings (2013).   • Friday, October 17, 7 p.m.: Pre-concert talk with composer David Lang at the Arthur Zankel Music Center, Helen Filene Ladd Concert Hall, at Â鶹Æƽâ°æ College.

  • Friday, October 17, 8 p.m.: Concert by Ensemble ACJW at the Arthur Zankel Music Center, Helen Filene Ladd Concert Hall, at Â鶹Æƽâ°æ College. The program includes Mozart’s Quartet for Flute, Violin, Viola, and Cello in D Major, K. 285; David Lang’s these broken wings; and Beethoven’s Septet in E-flat Major, Op. 20

  • Saturday, October 18, 5 p.m.: The performance featuring Debra Fernandez and So Percussion repeats. Free, reservation required. Call 518-580-8080. A reception follows the event.

David Lang (b. 1957) is a New York–based composer who is active in many genres and media. His piece the little match girl passion, commissioned by Carnegie Hall, won the Pulitzer Prize in 2008 and a Grammy Award in 2010. Lang is Musical America's 2013 Composer of the Year and recipient of Carnegie Hall's Debs Composer's Chair for 2013–14. An active collaborator, he has worked closely with a diverse group of artists including Peter Greenaway, Benjamin Millepied, Susan Marshall, Darren Aronofsky, Ann Hamilton and Mark Dion. Lang is co-artistic director of New York's Bang on a Can, which he founded in 1987 with composers Michael Gordon and Julia Wolfe, and professor of music composition at the Yale School of Music.
