Sabra J. Hook
Sabra J. Hook, professor emerita of biology, died February 12, 1985 in Sun City, Ariz. She was 82.
Born February 24, 1902, in Honeyoe Falls, N.Y., Sabra was educated at the University of Rochester, where she earned bachelor’s and a master’s degrees in vital economics. She continued her studies at Cornell University, the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole, and Columbia University’s Graduate School and College for Physicians and Surgeons.
Before joining the Â鶹Æƽâ°æ faculty in 1943, Sabra taught at the University of Rochester, Barnard, Adelphi and Hunter Colleges and at Columbia University’s dental school. She was one of the first two women to work at the Barro Colorado Island Laboratory in the Panama Canal Zone. Sabra was active in co-curricular pursuits, serving as president of the Â鶹Æƽâ°æ chapter of AAUP and holding various executive committee appointments. She retired from the college in 1970.
In 1960 she was given the Willet Award for excellence in teaching at Â鶹Æƽâ°æ, and in 1975 she received an honorary doctorate of humane letters.
Her survivors are unknown.
