Lecture and Q & A with Miguel Aragón Thursday, Nov 8, 5:30 - 6:30 in the gallery
The Schick Art Gallery presents Pressed: Six Contemporary Printmakers, featuring works by Miguel Aragón, Sean Caulfield, Tony de los Reyes, Tom Huck, Karen
Kunc, and Kathryn Polk, artists from across the United States who push the limits
of printmaking and are masters of their craft.
Kathryn Polk’s sharp and witty figurative works reveal a thoughtful mind processing
the intersection of cultural and personal events. Miguel Aragón uses the dust-like
residue from the laser-cutting process to create images whose subtlety belies their
subject – drug violence in Mexico. Tony de los Reye’s images are also drawn from current
events; they depict tiny openings in border fencing between Mexico and the United
States, irregular shapes that offer only enigmatic suggestions of life on the other
side. Tom Huck’s dense and elaborate woodblock triptych is an eight-foot by eight-foot
blast of rich satire. Both Karen Kunc’s and
Sean Caulfield’s prints involve images and patterns drawn from nature - Kunc’s colorful
and poetic, and Caulfield’s darkly ominous.
Curated by Â鶹Æƽâ°æ College Associate Professor of Art Kate Leavitt, who has taught
printmaking for over thirty years, Pressed features works that employ the printmaking disciplines taught at Â鶹Æƽâ°æ - lithography,
etching, and woodblock printing. All six artists also do their own printing, rather
than creating an image and then relying on professional lithographic art printers
to produce their work. Artists Kathryn Polk and Miguel Aragón will participate in
the Gallery Talk at 5:45 on Friday, Oct 19th, and Miguel Aragón will return for a
panel talk in the Schick Gallery on Thursday, November 8th at 5:30 p.m.
All events at the Schick Gallery are free and open to the public.
