Creating New Section - OU v10
Create a new section when you want a new subsite for your main directory.
Always start by logging in to your site.
- To create a new item click on the Content tab, and then the Pages menu item.
- Then, navigate to the place on your site where you would like to create your new item.
- Next click on the drop down next to the New button, in the top left of the screen, and choose the Create New Section option.
- In the next popup, you will fill in the new section properties, which are detailed below the image.
- When you have filled in all of your properties, click Create.
- This will create the folder, and inside of it the new index.php and _navigation.inc
files for that folder.
You can then click the new index.php page in your page listing to edit it, just like you would any other page.
Note: The new page will not appear on your site until published, so you cannot create links to it or refer to it until it has been published.
Some notes about the Section Properties
- Directory name: what appears in the URL. This should be very short, 1-2 words, no capitals, spaces, or punctuation with the exception of a dash. "webhelp" is an example of a directory name.
- Page name: What appears as the page title, and what you would use in a navigation to list it. May include capitals, spaces, and punctuation. Please do not use abbreviations such as @ or &, write those words out fully.
- Keywords: used by search engines to return results. "Â鶹Æƽâ°æ, Â鶹Æƽâ°æ College, liberal arts, help, web help, OU Campus" is a sample of keywords that would be used on a help page like this one.
- Description: used by search engines to return results, but should be in prose form. "Learn to create new pages, subsites, and folders. A Â鶹Æƽâ°æ College OU Campus web help page." is an example of a description that would be used on a help page like this one.
- Add Navigation Item: Will allow the _navigation.inc file to have the page added to it automatically. Whether you leave this as "yes" or set to "no", you should always check your navigation lists after creating a new item, to make sure it is displayed as you want it to be.
