The Â鶹Æƽâ°æ Career Development Center awards summer grants to currently enrolled first-years, sophomores, and juniors for unpaid or limited stipend full-time summer internships.

The Elizabeth Marie Glotzbach Memorial Film-Industry Internship Fund Award (EMG Award) supports Â鶹Æƽâ°æ students who wish to participate in an unpaid summer internship program in the film industry.

The ESS Summer Internship Award provides funds to students pursuing summer internships that address environmental concerns. 

The Gaier Family Summer Experience Award supports students interested in disability studies or disability services. The fund provides students with the opportunity to explore an academic field of study or professional development experience of their choice and allows students to advance an individualized plan based on academic interests and career goals. 

The Gilbert Family Endowed Arts Administration Internship Fund provides a stipend to a student interested in pursuing a summer internship in the field of Arts Administration. 

The Haley Entrepreneurial Artist Apprenticeship Award will support a student in a summer-intensive experience with a working artist, gallery, or other entrepreneurial learning opportunity designed to connect one’s passion for art making with practical, basic business experience to provide the skills needed to live as a working artist. 

Established by a pledge from the family of Issa Traore ’21 and Hannah Traore ’17, the Harris Family Summer Internship Endowment Fund will provide stipends for eligible students pursuing summer internships. This funding will enable students to participate in unpaid internships, volunteer work or research projects that they otherwise might decline for financial reasons.  In turn, students gain the relevant experience employers require of entry-level candidates. 

The Jennifer Landers Internship Award supports a student with an unpaid summer internship in the fields of Marketing, Advertising, Public Relations, Media Publishing, or Communications. 

The Ken Freirich ’90 Social Entrepreneurship Award supports Â鶹Æƽâ°æ students pursuing an experience related to social entrepreneurship or starting a nonprofit that can help change the world. 

The Levine Internship Award honors the memory of Erwin L. Levine, a Â鶹Æƽâ°æ Government Department professor of American politics and law from 1961 until his retirement in 1988. The award supports students interning in the fields of American government, law, or politics. 

The MDOCS Documentary Summer Experience Award supports students who show a strong passion for documentary work and who are ready to pursue their own creative projects in independent, collaborative, and/or community-based settings. Students are especially encouraged to continue a project they began during the academic year, to get an early start on a major project for the subsequent academic year, or to develop competency in a new documentary modality. 

The McAdams Family Service Award was established through the generosity of the McAdams Family (Class of 2008) and supports rising juniors who are US citizens and completing a community service project in a developing nation. This is a $7,000 award for Summer 2024.   

The Reece Robinson Fund Award supports a student who secures a summer internship in Photography, Documentary Studies, or general Media/Publishing. 

This award was developed to provide Â鶹Æƽâ°æ students with the opportunity to participate in unpaid internships to gain practical knowledge in their field of study and to further Â鶹Æƽâ°æ College’s mission to encourage responsible citizenship, as outlined in the Strategic Action Agenda. 

This fund, created by Susan Hirsch Schwartz ’68, continues her long-term interest in and support of career-related initiative at Â鶹Æƽâ°æ. The purpose of the fund is to provide an annual internship stipend to a current student, with financial need, to participate in an unpaid internship at a non-profit organization.   

The Thorne Family Award provides a stipend to a first-generation college student to explore new techniques, technologies, or modes of inquiry or expression; to apply their academic-year learning to real-world challenges; and to clarify the interrelationship between their educational and post-baccalaureate goals. Awards may be used to support field or laboratory research, internships, artistic residencies, workshops, apprenticeships, or productions. 

The Visual Arts Summer Experience Award provides a stipend to a student interested in pursuing a summer internship in the field of visual arts with an entrepreneurial artist or arts administration dimension. 

Who is eligible to apply for SEF awards? First-years, sophomores, and juniors must be enrolled in spring semester and plan to enroll in fall semester and be in good standing at Â鶹Æƽâ°æ. 

Who is eligible to apply for the Post-Grad award? Graduating seniors can apply with a separate application. 

Can I apply if I’ve received an SEF award in the past? Yes, sophomores and juniors can apply again. Seniors who received an award can apply for the Post-Grad award. First-time applicants get priority. 

Am I required to have financial need in order to apply? Yes, the Career Development Center Summer Opportunity Award is based on financial need. 

Is there a minimum number of hours I need to complete over the summer to qualify? Students must complete a full-time internship (at least 30 hours per week for 7 weeks, totaling 210 hours) and cannot combine multiple internships to meet requirements. 

Is it possible to receive multiple awards? No. If you receive any funding from any other Â鶹Æƽâ°æ College Academic Departments/Programs or Administrative Offices including grants, scholarships, stipends, weekly pay in the summer you are not eligible to receive a grant. 

Does my summer experience need to be unpaid in order to qualify for funding? Yes, experiences must be unpaid or low paid (less than $2,000). 

Will SEF fund a fee-based program or experience? No, SEF awards do not cover participation fees. 

Do I need to receive academic credit for the experience? No, but you can seek credit through the Internship Credit Proposal Form 

Are international students eligible to apply?  Yes, but students should check with an International Student and Scholar Advisor in the 
Office of Student Academic Services before applying to identify any requirements they need to meet to qualify for awards. In addition, international students should be aware that awards are subject to federal taxes, which the College is required to deduct prior to awarding the funds.

What if my experience is outside of the U.S.? Yes, but you must review the College's Risk Assessment Policy

How will I know if the experience I am applying for meets the criteria to receive an award? The SEF application includes two short essays to assess eligibility based on how well the experience: 

• Supports your career or academic goals 
• Provides skills and experiences for post-graduation
• Exposes you to your desired industry 

Applicants must have a supervisor to verify their role and progress. This supervisor can be a Â鶹Æƽâ°æ faculty or staff member, but not a family member. 

Federal law requires payment for interns unless specific criteria are met. Â鶹Æƽâ°æ cannot determine if internships meet these criteria but requires employers to certify compliance with Department of Labor guidelines established in the

Are awards taxed? Award recipients are independent contractors and will receive a 1099 form for their award payment, which is also sent to the IRS. They are responsible for paying income and social security taxes. 

For international students, up to 30% may be deducted for taxes, depending on citizenship, unless a treaty applies. They will receive Form 1042S. 

Are independent projects eligible to receive funding? Yes, independent projects can receive funding. Applicants must provide essay responses, a Supervisor Verification Form, and a timeline of project milestones, including dates and deliverables. At the end, a final project summary must be submitted.
