LEVEL INFORMATION

If you have any questions concerning which level to sign up for please contact the Director: Jill Greenleaf at jgreenle@skidmore.edu or 580-5368.

  • Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills                                                                                                                                         This level is for the non-swimmer. Children will become comfortable in the water, exploring with support: floating, kicking and swimming on both the front and back. Lessons will also focus on children submerging their face while blowing bubbles and safely entering and exiting the pool independently.
  • Level 2: Fundamental Water Skills                                                                                                                                           Children must be comfortable in the water, including putting their face in the water, prior to beginning Level 2. Students will learn to float, kick and swim on the back and front without support. Children will also learn to jump into the pool, tread water and begin to coordinate breathing.
  • Level 3: Stroke Development                                                                                                                                                    Children must be able to swim 5 yards on their front and back prior to beginning Level 3. Lessons will focus on improving the coordination of the front stroke (freestyle) and backstroke while also adding elementary backstroke. Rotary – or side – breathing in freestyle will be introduced. With practice, children will become more skilled at jumping into the pool, treading water and may begin diving skills.
  • Level 4: Stroke Improvement                                                                                                                                                    Prior to beginning Level 4, children must be able to swim 15 yards of freestyle (crawl stroke) with some face submersion. Children should also be able to swim 15 yards of backstroke. Continued attention will be paid to refining rotary breathing, improving freestyle, backstroke and elementary backstroke technique and endurance. Sidestroke, breaststroke and butterfly kick will be introduced. Diving and treading water skills will also be reinforced.
  • Level 5: Stroke Refinement                                                                                                                                                     Children must be able to swim 25 yards of both freestyle with side breathing and backstroke prior to beginning Level 4. Additionally, children should have some familiarity and comfort with breaststroke, sidestroke and elementary backstroke. Stroke refinement of all strokes will continue in Level 5 while students will also be taught the butterfly stroke. Diving and turns will also be taught.
